Victoria Nguyen 阮·维多利亚

Victoria Nguyen is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Chicago. Her research interests include urban studies, planning and governance, materiality, political ecology, and the politics of heritage spaces. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Her dissertation, based on over 24 months of fieldwork in various sectors of urban development and Beijing’s old city, analyzes the proliferation of urban-rural grey zones and “un-urban” city spaces in the context of mass urbanization, with an eye toward how new ideals and metrics of the urban are shaping social and material life in contemporary China. She holds a BA from McGill University and an MA the University of Toronto.
